What is gardening?

Since we have defined what a garden is, we now want to define what gardening is. Let’s check out the dictionary again.’s definitions of gardening is…

“the act of cultivating or tending a garden.”
“the work or art of a gardener.”

What’s interesting about these definitions is that gardening is defined as both an ’act’ as well as an ’art’, a conundrum we need to explore.

What is a Hardiness Zone?

A hardiness zone is a geographically-defined zone in which a specific category of plant life is capable of growing, as defined by temperature hardiness, or ability to withstand the minimum temperatures of the zone. The zones were first developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and have subsequently been adopted elsewhere. They are categorized according to the mean of the lowest temperature recorded each winter, termed the “average annual minimum temperature”. Thus if five successive winters reach respective minima of −14 °C, −12 °C, −8 °C, −16 °C, and −13 °C, the mean coldest temperature is −12.6 °C, placing the site in zone 7.

Hardiness zones are given a number ranging from 1 to 11 to group together the range of average temperatures.

“a piece of ground or other space, commonly with ornamental plants, trees, etc., used as a park or other public recreation area: a public garden.”
“a fertile and delightful spot or region.”

Looking at the definitions and the original German word there are a couple of noteworthy keywords;

Gardening Zone was created to be a place that all gardeners and wannabe gardeners can find out all the information that they want about gardening. This is not a trivial task and the articles will be added to in time. If you have gardening articles that you want us to add, just drop us a PM(private message). [click on messages on the right hand side and send a message to ‘admin’], or just go to the suggestions forum and tell us.

The forums are a way exchange information, hints and tips and have some general chit-chat. We’ve seen several garden forums that do not have search facilities and are not organised in any structural way which makes looking things up VERY difficult. Hopefully our forums will work for you.

If you have any suggestions, criticisms or comments, please add them to the suggestions forum.

We hope you enjoy yourself and find the site useful and above all FRIENDLY!

Enjoy yourself hi
